Cambridge City 3 – 1 Dereham

Dereham travelled to Wilberforce Road, in search of their 4th win in a row and returned to Norfolk empty handed.

Cambridge started the game strong and Dereham found themselves under a lot of pressure from the first whistle. Some crucial blocks from the Dereham defence and good saves by Maddy Marshall, kept the score goalless!

Dereham then got a foot hold in the game and their best chance came from a quick restart from Ali Walters and a sharp turn and drive from Fran Grapes into the Cambridge D led to her shot narrowly missed the back post.

Dereham then continued to push on and were caught by a quick counter attack where they played the ball round the remaining Dereham defenders and tapped home at the back post. Both sides had chances from short corners towards the end of the half but neither team could convert them and the score remained 1-0 to Cambridge at the break.

Dereham came out hungry and fired up for the 2nd half and dominated the opening exchanges. They came close from a short corner but deservedly got on the scoreboard when Nat Grapes intercepted well just outside the Cambridge D and played a superb disguised pass for Pip Howes to deflect into the bottom corner.

The momentum was then with Dereham and although not many chances were created, they played the next 10 minutes firmly camped in the Cambridge half! Cambridge held strong and grew back into the game.

Dereham were then hit again on the break resulting in Cambridge winning a short corner. The original corner was blocked and saved well by Dereham but another rebound fell kindly to the Cambridge forward who slotted the ball home inside the right hand post.

With 5 minutes to go Cambridge pushed forward again working the ball well down their right and worked it to the baseline. The ball was cut back inside to the middle of the D where the Cambridge forward managed to put it past the Dereham keeper. Despite Dereham’s protests that this was via her foot, the goal stood!

The remaining 5 minutes were played in the Cambridge half with Dereham creating chance after chance and several shorts corners but failing to convert any of these chances and set up a tense finished.
