Norwich City 2s 2 – 0 Dereham Ladies 1st

Dereham ladies 1st team made the short trip to Norwich City 2s on Saturday, where they returned home pointless to a strong Norwich City side!

Norwich City started as the strongest team and put Dereham under a lot of early pressure. This forced Dereham keeper, Jess Nightingale Webb, into action. She made a fine double save where she saved the first shot and was quickly out to smother the rebound and clear it to safety.

Norwich continued to pile on the pressure but the Dereham defence of Tammy Dye, Eve Coulet Settle and Helen Malcomson held firm with some strong and last ditch tackles determined to keep the score at 0-0.

Dereham then woke up and had a good chance of their own as they broke on the counter attack, leaving the Norwich defence outnumbered. Dereham were unable to get their shot off but instead were awarded a short corner when Ali Waters found the defenders foot. The short corner, unfortunately, came to nothing with strong defending from Norwich.

Jess Nightingale Webb was determined to keep Norwich at bay and continued to make several saves including a fine diving save to her left to tip the ball round the post to safety.

Norwich continued to pressure the Dereham defence and finally got their reward on 30 minutes with some slick passing down the Norwich right, a good pick up on the reverse from the Norwich forward and a neat 1-2 finishing. The forward picked the ball up on the edge of the D and fired home in the reverse leaving the defence and keeper with no chance.

The final 5 minutes of the half was played out in the Norwich half with Dereham really mounting some strong pressure on the Norwich defence. They came close through Grace Cresswell taking a quick shot on the reverse and Fran Grapes but the Norwich keeper was up to the task and the score remained 1-0 to Norwich at half time.

Dereham Ladies 1st vs Norwich City 2nd Second Half

Dereham pulled their socks up at half time and came out on the front foot for the second half and were dominating possession. But for all their dominance in possession, Dereham were struggling to break Norwich down.

Dereham worked the ball through the midfield and found Sarah Dove who drove towards the D and played a pass towards Pip Howes but found a foot on the way. The short corner came to Nat Grapes whose shot/pass was well intercepted by the defender. Another short corner followed shortly after and this time the ball was slipped to Pip Howes whose shot was also saved well by the Norwich keeper.

Dereham remained on the front foot creating lots of half chances. As Norwich were reduced to 10 players Dereham had a chance to draw themselves level when Lucy Soame won and passed forward to Erren Ampleford who drove at the Norwich defence. Her pass didn’t quite find Fran Grapes but Sarah Dove picked up the pieces and found Fran who cut in the D but the ball evaded everyone and went behind.

With minutes left on the clock Dereham pressed everyone forward but were dispossessed and a quick long pass found a high Norwich forward who took the ball in her stride and rounded the on rushing Keeper and calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.

Dereham move on to next week now where they welcome Norwich Dragons to Greenfields road for their latest game.
