Dereham Ladies 1st 1 – 0 Wisbech

Dereham Ladies 1st were back in action after their match with Ipswich fell victim to the cold snap. They welcomed Wisbech to Greenfields Road on Saturday.

Dereham started brightly against Wisbech and won a series of short corners in the opening stages of the match and although they came close, they unfortunately were unable to convert any of them. Moments later good link up play between Nat Grapes and Charlotte Taylor saw the latter drive into the D on the right hand side but her shot was well saved but the Wisbech goal keeper.

Pressing forward Georgie Edwards won the ball well off the Wisbech midfield and she drove at the heart of the Wisbech defence before playing a pin point pass to Edie Topping at the back post whose deflection first time shot went agonisingly wide. This was Edwards’ last action as she was forced off through injury.

Wisbech then came into the game and started dominating possession, transferring the ball side to side. As they pressed forward this left space for Dereham to counter. Tammy Dye dispossessed the forward and played a quick pass to Charlotte Taylor who drove from left to right and played a pass under her arm to an unmarked Fran Grapes in the D, who took the shot on first time but could only find the side netting.

Dereham finished the half on the front foot and passed the ball nicely through the midfield ending with Ali Waters driving in the D along the base line and play the ball dangerously across the D. Unfortunately the ball didn’t find a Dereham player and the scored remained 0-0 at half time.

Dereham Ladies 1st v Wisbech Second Half

Early in the second half Wisbech had their best chance of the game as they worked the ball well round the top of the Dereham D. A square pass from the forward found another advancing Wisbech forward who took a first time shot,  Dereham shot stopper Jess Nightingale Webb was equal to the shot and cleared it from the Dereham lines.

Dereham then sprung into action and and neat play between Sarah Dove and Nat grapes lead to Lucy Soame picking out Ali Waters on the right. Ali drove into the D and cut a fine ball back for Fran Grapes on the penalty spot who, off-balanced, missed her shot and Wisbech cleared.

Moments later good work from Nat Grapes in the midfield drove into the D and won a short corner. This time the ball was slipped to Grace Cresswell who shot near post, the keeper half cleared the ball only into the path of Charlotte Taylor who, under pressure from the keeper, got her shot off on the reverse, through the keepers legs only to see it strike the outside of the post.

Finally with 4 minutes left on the clock, Dereham finally and deservedly broke the deadlock when good work from Charlotte Taylor won a short corner. This time Dereham got it right and Nat Grapes slipped the ball to Grace Cresswell who’s shot was deflected by Captain Lucy Soame to give Dereham the lead.

As Dereham looked to close the game out it was Wisbech who had the last chance through a short corner of their own. The Dereham defence held firm and Dereham got the 1-0 win! Charlotte Taylor was player of the match for her good all round performance.
