Spalding 1 – 6 Dereham ladies 1st

Dereham were on the road this week to face the Spalding side they hosted last weekend.

Dereham came out much faster than the previous week and created chances right from the first whistle. Fran Grapes had the first chance of the match as she received a measured pass from Hayley Toleman and drove into the D on the right hand side only to fire across the goal, wide of the left hand post and advancing Dereham players.

Dereham pushed on again and were rewarded with a short corner after 5 minutes. Spalding defended this well and with Dereham pushed high they hit them with a fast direct counter attack resulting in a penalty stroke being awarded for the home side. This was calmly dispatched sending Jess Nightingale-Webb the wrong way and the ball going into the bottom right.

This spurred Dereham on and onto the offensive again. Ali waters was the 1st player to try her luck but saw her shot miss the target. Next it was Hayley Toleman to try her luck as she burst through but narrowly missed the target with the keeper rushing out to narrow the angles down.

Dereham continued to put pressure on the Spalding goal and their defence. This time good link up play from Pip Howes, Fran Grapes and Hayley Toleman resulted in Pip taking the ball on her reverse and forcing the Spalding keeper into a sharp save to her left.

The pressure finally took it toll on the home side after 15 minutes, and great work in the D by Nat Grapes saw the award of a short corner. Nat Grapes then slipped the ball to Pip Howes who’s shot across the goal was deflected in by Dereham captain, Lucy Soame, to make it 1-1.

Dereham didn’t let up and went forward again continuously creating several chances. The latest chance from another short corner which Charlotte Taylor couldn’t convert at the near post. Moments later Dereham thought they had taken the lead when Eve Settle Coulet threaded a ball to Pip Howes in the D and her reverse stick shot nestled into the bottom corner of the Spalding goal, only for it to be rightly ruled out for a back stick infringement.

With 6 minutes left of the half Dereham deservedly took the lead when play down the Dereham right, starting with Helen Malcolmson and finding Georgie Edwards who in turn drove into the D and her pass found youngster Edie Topping in the right place at the right time to bundle home the ball at the back post.

2-1 became 3-1 with a minute left in the clock of the half and it was Edwards again who was the provider winning a short corner, finding a Spalding foot in the D. Charlotte Taylor’s drag out found Nat Grapes at the top, whose shot on goal had Dereham queueing up to deflect the ball. Hayley Toleman didn’t need asking twice and superbly deflected it into the roof of the net! Exactly what Dereham’s first half performance deserved.

Half Time

Half time came and went and Dereham continued where they left off, not giving the Spalding defence a minutes’ peace. A strong Dereham press resulted in Spalding struggling to get the ball out from the back and Hayley Toleman capitalising on a loose ball and driving into the D, then unleashing a thunderous strike past the keeper to make it 4-1.

Spalding then created 2 chances of their own and forcing Jess in the Dereham goal into a fine double save. They attacked strongly down the right, neat accurate passing leading to the Spalding forward having time to turn and shoot which was saved well and then the rebound shot also smothered by Webb to keep the score line 4-1.

Dereham continued to attack and exploit the space out wide. The latest efforts coming from Edie Topping who burst into box on her reverse only to find the side of the Spalding goal. Ali Waters was also providing driving runs down the right and round the back of the Spalding defence but her cross on this occasion didn’t fall kindly for Dereham and the attack fizzled out.

Dereham then put the game to bed with a fine flowing counter attack of their own. Lucy Soame won the ball in her own D and stayed composed to run with the ball out and turn defence into attack in an instant. Her pass finding Pip Howes who in turn found Sarah Dove who played the ball down the line nicely for Fran Grapes to run on to. Fran then turned and beat her defender before releasing the ball to the unmarked Edie Topping who, once again, was in the right place at the right time to give Dereham their fifth.

The scoring was then complete, with 8 minutes to go, by hat trick hero and player of the match, Hayley Toleman. Again it was good play down the Dereham left and when Grace Cresswell’s pass found Edie Topping who turned and drove strongly left to right entering the D. Her shot/pass fell at the stick of Hayley who took a touch, calmly moved it to the right under the pressure of the keeper and slotted home inside the post for a thoroughly deserved hat trick and player of the match performance.

Next week Dereham are back at home and welcome Ipswich to Greenfields Road.
